Hockey Northwestern Ontario award winners announced
June 15 -- A number of well-deserving individuals were honoured with awards by Hockey Northwestern Ontario at the organization's annual general meeting staged over the weekend in Thunder Bay.
Long-time volunteer Cosimo Filane of Schreiber was recognized with the T.B. (Bones) McCormack Meritorious Award honouring his years of service to the branch.
Picking up the HNO trainer of the year award was Meggan McLeod who was the branch winner for the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario Dr. Tom Pashby award. Among McLeod's activities this past season was serving as athletic trainer for Team Ontario Red, which captured the Canadian women's under-18 championship in B.C.
A pair of coaches who have spent many years behind the bench were also recognized.
Ric Nicholetts of Thunder Bay and Kenora's Doug Novak garnered Central and Eastern Zone volunteer of the year laurels respectively while Rick Salmon was the named the Eastern Zone honouree for this award.
Officials were also rewarded for their work on the ice as well.
Pierre Pellerin of Nipigon was named the Most Deserving Official, Dryden's Alex Lugli was tabbed as the most promising referee while Adam Blando, who currently resides in Thunder Bay, took home most improved official honours.
