Elks, Hawks skate to 5-5 tie

Nov. 14--The Nipigon Elks and Northern Hawks skated to a 5-5 tie in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action Friday evening at Nipigon Arena.

It was the visiting Hawks who opened the scoring as Gavin MacVicar beat Nipigon netminder Thomas Gratz eight minutes in.

Evan Stewart then potted a pair of goals for the Elks to give the home side the lead after the first period.

Josh Bannon, Michael Vis and Jordan Miller, on a penalty shot, would put the Hawks on top in the second period before Jesse Boucher pulled Nipigon to within a goal striking with 26 seconds left in the middle stanza.

Travis Komar and Alex Jeffrey would then tally before the third period was eight minutes old to give Nipigon the lead once again, but Justin Backor's effort with four minutes remaining would pull the Hawks even.

The Northern Hawks out shot their opponents 67-35 in this one with Gratz making 62 saves while Kirk Bodnar in the Hawks net had 30 stops.

Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA play continues Saturday as the K&A Wolverines continue their three-game road trip in Marathon vs. the Superior Eagles. The game gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
