Kings clip Hawks

Oct. 15--Cullen Merrit scored twice helping lead the Mitsubishi Motors AAA Midget Kings to a 6-1 win over the Northern Hawks in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League play Wednesday at Fort William First Nation Arena.

The Kings opened the scoring as they got a late first period power play goal by Spencer Hogan with just 3-10ths of a second left in the opening frame.

Four second period goals made it 5-0 Kings after 40 minutes as Merritt tallied twice in between markers by Josh Elvish and Joe Szura.

The Hawks Jordan Baraniuk snapped Spencer Malone's shutout bid five minutes into the third period while Mitchell Fox added the Kings final tally to round out the scoring.

Malone made 29 saves in picking up the win for the Kings who pumped 49 shots on Hawks netminder Michael Skirving.

League play continues Friday when the Nip-Rock Elks host the Superior Eagles in a 7:30 p.m. start at Nipigon Arena.
