K&A Wolverines repeat at tournament champs

Oct. 5--The K&A Wolverines are champions of the Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League preseason tournament for a third straight year with their latest victory coming Sunday as they skated to a 9-3 win over the Northern Hawks at the Tournament Centre claiming the Joe Ward Memorial Trophy.

Luke DeCal scored twice and added an assist in the win while Trevor Whillens and Nathan Spina both had a goal and two helpers to pace K&A offensively.

Sean Spenrath, with two, James Kane, Justin Backor and Tyler Rizzuto were the other Wolverines marksmen.

Jordan George made 31 saves to pick up the win in goal for his side.

Jordan Baraniuk, Joel Smith and Travis Blackburn had the goals for the Hawks with Michael Skirivng and Jason Jaundoo combining to face 67 shots in a losing cause.

K&A advanced to the final with a 8-1 triumph over the Superior Eagles in one semifinal played Sunday morning while the Hawks scored two third period goals in rallying for a 3-2 win over the Mitsubishi Motors Kings.

Sean Cunninghame had two for the Wolverines in the semifinal while Spina, Spenrath, Myles Stevens, Brian Glavish, Nico Anderson and Stephen Raynak added singles. Davis Buchanan made 15 saves to earn the victory between the pipes.

Devon Weller was the lone Eagles goal scorer with starter Markus Leikkari and Jayme Brattengeier coming in relief facing 40 shots in net.

Dustin Blackburn notched the first two Hawks markers while Smith had the game-winner with 5:30 remaining.

Spencer Hogan and Michael Delvecchio scored for the Kings.

The teams will now get set to begin league play, which gets underway Thursday as K&A hosts the Kings back at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
