Wolverines top standings after day two of tourney

Oct. 3--The defending champion K&A Wolverines top the standings after day two of the Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League preseason tournament for the Joe Ward memorial trophy being held at the Tournament Centre.

The Wolverines won both of their games Friday defeating the Superior Eagles 3-1 in their morning match and dumped the Nip-Rock Elks 13-0 in their evening affair.

Tyler Rizzuto, Nico Anderson and David Renzi scored for K&A vs. the Eagles while Curtis Atkinson had the lone Eagles marker.

Jordan George made 23 saves to earn the win in goal against his former club while Jayme Brattengeier faced 35 shots in a losing cause.

In their night cap the Wolverines exploded for seven first period goals and never looked back cruising to the shutout to win.

Brent Winkworth fired a hat-trick for K&A in the victory with James Kane and Nathan Spina both tallying twice.

Sean Cunninghame, Justin Backor, Anderson, Rizzuto, Luke DeCal and Mike Mapledoram added singles while Davis Buchanan posted a 14-save shutout.

The Northern Hawks also picked up a pair of wins on Friday defeating the Thunder Bay Kings AAA major midget squad 4-1 in the morning before edging the Superior Eagles AAA midgets from Marathon 4-3 on a late goal.

Chris Holomego tallied twice for the Hawks with Michael Vis and Daniel Biscardi adding the other markers. Michael Skirving had 34 saves in net.

Mitchell Fox had the lone Kings goal while netminder Colin Dzijacky faced 22 shots.

In the final game of the night Jerry Franzese scored his second of the contest with just 57 seconds remaining to lift the Hawks to the victory.

Chris Bewski and Ryan Powell also contributed goals for the Hawks as Skirving faced 31 shots for his second win of the day.

Jacob Nolan, Jordan Carne struck for the Eagles as did Cam Gross who tied the contest with only 1:19 left to tie the game only to see Franzese pot the game-winner 22 seconds later.

Brattengeier had 27 saves between the pipes for the Eagles in this one.

Round robin play wraps up Saturday while the semifinals go Sunday morning followed by the title game in the afternoon.
