Hawks roll to fifth straight win

Feb. 1--The Northern Hawks rolled to their fifth straight win Friday evening defeating the Superior Eagles 7-3 in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action at the Tournament Centre.

Each side scored twice before the match was eight minutes old with Curtis Sandberg and Mark Menei beating Eagles starter Thomas Gratz and Ben Gamache and Cam Gross scoring on Hawks' netminder Kirk Bodnar.

Two more markers by the Hawks in the second period put them ahead for good. Gavin MacVicar struck on the power play at 2:15 of the middle stanza while Menei buried his second of the night nine minutes later.

Brian Sippila and Gamache traded tallies 19 seconds apart five minutes into the third period to make it 5-3.

Menei then completed the hat trick with an unassisted effort at 7:37 while Mario Figliomeni wrapped up the scoring on the night with his 13th of the season with five minutes remaining.

Shots on goal were 30 apiece in the contest with the Hawks going 1-2 on the power play. The Eagles were 1-5 with the man advantage.

With win number five in a row the second place Hawks record improves 14-4-3 while the third place Eagles saw their record dip to 8-5-4.

The Eagles will be back on Tournament Centre ice Saturday evening as they take on league-leading K&A Wolverines at 7:30 p.m.
