Hawks hand Wolverines first loss

Jan. 31--The Northern Hawks scored the game's last three goals handing the K&A Wolverines their first loss of the season Thursday, a 5-2 set-back, in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action at the Tournament Centre.

Stefano Lento opened the scoring for the Hawks midway through the first period only to see Adrian Cordes knot it up at 1-1 a couple minutes later with the only other goal in the opening frame.

Mark Menei put the Hawks back on top at 6:49 of the middle stanza while Sean Spenrath tied it up striking shorthanded just 42 seconds later.

Gavin MacVicar then scored the eventual game-winner with a couple minutes to play in the second period.

Curtis Sandberg and Kris Hardy, on the power play, added third period insurance markers for the Hawks as they improved their record to 13-4-3 while the Wolverines fell to 18-1-5.

Kirk Bodnar made 32 saves to pick up the win in net for the Hawks while Kelly Heikkila was saddled wih the loss facing 36 shots.

The Hawks return to game action Friday evening as they host the Superior Eagles back at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
