Third period rally gives Hawks win

Jan. 27--The Northern Hawks needed a five-goal third period outburst for a come from behind 9-7 win over the North End Flames in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action Sunday evening at Delaney Arena.

North End jumped out to 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Kameron Kuzyk and Andrew Hessey while Mark Menei replied for the Hawks.

The Flames increased their lead to 4-1 before the secod period was three minutes old as Eric Hjorth and Patrick Dowhos found the back of the net.

Curtis Sandberg cut the deficit to two goals midway through the middle stanza only to see Taylor Riley restore the lead to three a couple minutes later.

Brian Sippila for the Hawks and Taylor MacKenzie of the Flames traded goals after that while Sandberg's second of the night on the power play late in the second period started the comeback as it was 6-4 North End after 40 minutes.

The Hawks then roared to life in the third period scoring five times to complete the comeback.

Mario Figliomeni tied the game with a pair of markers before the frame was five minutes in before Rory Romano gave the Hawks their first lead at 5:21 with an unassisted effort.

Ryan McInerney potted the eventual game-winner midway through the third on the power play and Menei added a shorthanded goal with seven minutes left for his second of the evening.

Esa Leinonen scored his first of the season during a late man advantage for the Flames to round out the scoring in the high scoring affair.

The Hawks outshot North End 39-27 in this one with all four goaltenders seeing action at some point between the pipes, Cody Pelletier and Kirk Bodnar for the Hawks along with Mike Skirving and Mac Potter for the Flames.

Up next in league play sees the Hawks returning to game action Thursday when they meet the first place K&A Wolverines at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
