Wolverines clip Hawks to stay unbeaten

Jan. 15--Adrian Cordes scored twice and set-up two others as the K&A Wolverines clipped the Northern Hawks 7-3 Tuesday evening in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action at the Tournament Centre.

Cordes potted the only goal of the opening 20 minutes finishing off a feed from James Kane at 12:09.

The two sides traded a pair of markers apiece in the middle stanza with Cordes and Carlton Ylinen striking for K&A in his first game with the club while Michael Vis and Rory Romano tallied for the Hawks.

Sean Spenrath and Ben Soramaki, also skating in his first contest for K&A, notched shorthanded goals 12 seconds apart seven minutes into the third period to make it 5-2 Wolverines before Romano pulled the Hawks to within two on the same power play.

That was as close as the Hawks would get however as Brent Winkworth added two late goals to wrap up the scoring on the night.

Kelly Heikkila (9-0-3) made 31 saves to pick up the win in net for K&A while Kirk Bodnar (5-4-2) faced 35 shots suffering the loss.

With the victory the first place Wolverines remain unbeaten on the campaign at 16-0-4 while the second place Hawks slipped to 9-4-3.

Next up on the league schedule sees the Wolverines taking on the North End Flames back at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
