Eagles stop Flames 5-1

Dec. 22- Eric Letourneau scored twice and dished out an assist as part of a four-goal third period leading the Superior Eagles to a 5-1 victory over the North End Flames Saturday night in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League play at Delaney Arena.

The home side Flames got the only goal of the opening 20 minutes as affiliate player Kevin Melenchuk beat Eagles netminder Tom Gratz six minutes into the contest.

Despite pumping nearly 40 shots on North End goalkeeper Mike Skirving through the first two periods they did not get their first goal of the game until the 16:30 mark of the second period when Devon Weller came through with an unassisted, shorthanded effort getting his first tally of the season.

Letourneau then put the visiting Eagles up for good four minutes into the final stanza and he followed that up by feeding Kyle Breukelman for another shorthanded tally with nine minutes left.

Another Letourneau goal put the Eagles up 4-1 with five minutes remaining while Greg Trichilo rounded out the scoring at 17:23.

Gratz only had to make 10 saves in picking up his second win in as many starts since joining the club while Skirving ended the night facing 54 shots on net.

The league now takes a two-week break for the holidays with game action resuming in the New Year on Jan. 4 as the Nipigon Elks host the first place K&A Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. at Nipigon Arena.
