Wolverines hang on to remain unbeaten

Nov. 2—The K&A Wolverines built up a 4-0 lead into third period, but had to hang on for a 6-4 win over a scrappy Nipigon Elks squad Friday evening in Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League action at the Nipigon Arena.

Aaron Bruno and David Renzi supplied a pair of first period power play goals to put the visiting Wolverines up quickly while Sean Spenrath added another tally to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

K&A's Justin Backor had the lone marker midway through the middle stanza as the Wolverines looked to be well on their way following two periods of play.

Glenn Lockhart then struck twice for Nipigon in three-minute span early in the third period to cut the deficit in half.

Tyler Rizzuto made it 5-2 at 8:58, but the hometown Elks showed they still had something left in the tank as Kevin Thiessen at 12:12 and Travis Komar with two minutes remaining made it a one-goal game.

Nipigon pulled netminder Cody Junttola in favour of an extra attacker to try and complete the third period comeback, but Adrian Cordes dashed their hopes with an empty-netter to round out the scoring.

Jason Jaundoo made 34 saves to earn the win in goal for the Wolverines who out shot their opponents 39-38 on the night.

With the win K&A improved to 7-0-1 on the year while Nipigon slipped to 1-6.

League plays resumes Tuesday night as the Wolverines meets the Northern Hawks at the Tournament Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
