Defending champs open with win |
Oct. 4--The reigning Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League champion K&A Wolverines started the season where they left off a season ago, victorious, as they blanked the visiting Nipigon Elks 5-0 Thursday evening at the Tournament Centre.
Brent Winkworth's first of two goals just 12 seconds into the contest proved to be the winner for the Wolverines who shutout their opponents for the fourth straight time including capturing the league's pre-season tourney over the weekend with three consecutive no goals against efforts.K&A added three more goals by the time the game was just over 10 minutes old on markers by Nico Anderson, Sean Spenrath and Adrian Cordes.
Winkworth added another early in the third period to wrap up the goal scoring on the night. Justin Backor assisted on both of Winkworth's goals to help out offensively.
Kelly Heikkila turned aside all 24 shots he faced for the shutout.
Cody Junttola was peppered with 54 shots and was stuck with the loss for Nipigon.
Game action in the league resumes Oct. 9 as the Northern Hawks meet the North End Flames in an 8 p.m. start back at the Tournament Centre.
